Spring is one of my favorite seasons for many reasons. I love visiting opening day at the local Farmers’ Market, cutting fresh blooms from my garden and more importantly – celebrating May Day! Do you celebrate May Day? It’s a historical holiday on May 1st that celebrates spring with a festival of dancing, singing and eating cake. I was introduced to May Day in college and this special day has since made it’s way into our family’s traditions.
Some years we do celebrate with a small gathering of friends, but oftentimes we celebrate with a surprise bouquet of fresh spring flowers on our neighbors’ doors! On the morning of May 1st, I gather a few bouquets of flowers and place them in hanging baskets with chocolate and a handwritten note. It’s a special way of connecting with our neighbors and it sure does brighten our rainy spring days!
Today I am excited to share just how you can make your own unique May Day baskets to share with neighbors and friends on your block!
First, gather your favorite flowers and put them in a vase. I love ranunculus, peonies, daffodils and tulips!
Secondly, write a quick handwritten note to your neighbors and friends for a personal touch. I love the variety of floral cards from Rifle Paper Co. found at Shindig Paperie.
Once you’ve gathered your favorite blooms and written a thoughtful card to your neighborly friends, make sure to adorn your bouquet with ribbon and a handmade tag! I used my vintage-inspired label maker from Shindig to decorate my tags. Isn’t it so cute?
Finally, place your bouquet of flowers in a basket with your handwritten note and some chocolate. On the morning of May 1st, grab your coffee and the family, and head to your neighbors’ homes! Hang your sweet homemade gifts, knock and run! You’re sure to bring cheer to the block and celebrate May Day for years to come!
